Gilberto Flores
Dr. Jorge Gilberto Flores Gallegos was born on May 4, 1956. He studied mathematics at the Faculty of Science (Facultad de Ciencias, UNAM) and obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, working under the supervision of Prof. H. McKean. Upon his return to Mexico he joined the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics at IIMAS, where he worked from 1987 to June 2017.
As a teacher and educator he taught many courses in the Faculty of Sciences at UNAM; the Metropolitan Autonomous University in Mexico City, The Cooper Union School of Engineering and Tulane University, basically on calculus and differential equations. He supervised many B.Sc. and M.Sc. dissertations in mathematics and in physics.
The lines of research that he developed at IIMAS focused on differential equations and non-linear analysis. His scientific contributions are documented in several research articles and teaching materials. He was organizer and speaker of numerous conferences, colloquia, seminars and congresses of mathematics in Mexico and abroad and was specially enthusiastic about the Americas Conference, to which he devoted time and effort throughout the years, being a member of the executive committee for many years.
In addition to having a solid academic career, he also contributed to the mathematical community as jury in mathematics competitions, research project evaluator, referee of scientific journals and in general making mathematics accessible to a broad audience. He was part of several scientific committees in Mexico and abroad and played an essential role as head of the Mathematics and Mechanics Department of IIMAS in different periods.
For more than four decades he enjoyed and contributed to the academic community as a student, teacher and scientist. He died on June 15 2017. His friendship and contributions will remain with his students, colleagues, and family.
